First Appearance Chapter 1

Shiun Miura is the protagonist of Senka.

He is a descendant of the founder of Kirie and is officially its Keeper. However, he does not fulfil his duties as Keeper and chooses instead to explore the world.

Kirie

Shiun was born in Kirie, to Zanza and Ria of the Miura house. Zanza was the Keeper of Kirie at the time, and Shiun was brought up to follow in that position. When Shiun was three, his brother Len was born, and the two were trained together. This training consisted of a home education in the arts, history and politics, as well as speech and debate. From the age of ten, he was also taught to speak standard Yeshise in addition to his native Kiriese.

When he was 13, he fell into the river that flowed through the town. The fall itself did not cause any major injuries, and he managed to stay afloat. However, in Kirie the river runs concurrently with a major Flux river, and it was in the Flux that he drowned. His mind experienced a death-like state while his body and brain were intact. As most residents of Kirie he had a strong connection to the Flux and broke free of his "drowning" a few hours later. This experience sparked in him an interest in the Flux and related phenomena.

At the age of 17, Shiun negotiated a treaty with the neighbouring state of Karna in place of his father, who had fallen ill. The treaty was expected to make Kirie a neutral party in a war between Karna and the smaller states around it, but ended up ending the war completely. Three years later, with this success and a generally positive relationship with the people of Kirie, his ascent to Keeper after the passing of his father was welcomed by the town. With the change in rule, the Kei epoch started, named for Shiun's political success - Kei means "silence," a word used to refer to political peace.

He did not stay as Keeper very long, however. His interest in the Flux could not be satisfied with the limited observations he could make in Kirie, and he left to train in the art of controlling it as magic and to study it. Len took over as acting Keeper, and with his higher dedication to the position, he did a far better job at it than his celebrated brother. After a few years, the Kei epoch was officially renamed Keiro by popular election. It lacks a literal translation, but means something like "quieter than silence," referring to Shiun's absence.

Early Travels

Before leaving Kirie to travel, Shiun had left the town only for occasional political negotiations and thus had no experience with the common outside world, or even with the basics of travel and survival. He managed to walk and hitch-hike to visit several scholars and sages to learn all he could about the Flux over the following six years. To his surprise, there was not much more known about the Flux that he had not already observed and documented in Kirie. With one sage in particular he had something of a breakthrough and was able to fashion his control over Flux into a form of magic more basic and pure than common magic.

Disappointed in the amount and quality of information available, Shiun returned home to share what little he had learned, and to teach the basics of the magic he had developed. The "Flux magic" proved too inconsistent and weak in the hands of others, and was forgotten in favour of magic that was already common and useful. Over the years after that, he would develop his magic into a number of healing skills, which would prove useful in his later travels.

Exploration

Shiun's return to Kirie was short-lived. Content with the state of the town in his brother's hands, he once again left to travel, this time armed with a steadily building knowledge of trade, roads, and edible foods he could find in the wild. He returned to Kirie occasionally, but as he ventured farther and farther from the town, these visits became increasingly rare.

Shiun made money for his travels by working odd jobs and collecting beast bounties. He gained some additional money and some fame among scholars by publishing his findings through a publisher in Garen, although those books focused on the interaction of humans and animals with Flux and dared not venture into the nature of Flux itself.
